According to Euromonitor, the probiotic yogurt market in Latin America grew 32% annually from 2005 to 2007, and accounts for 30% of total yogurt market value in 2007. Marcelo Pedra, regional product manager at Danisco, states that Danisco is a major contributor to the market.
“Danisco works to meet the market demand for products containing probiotics with proven health benefits, such as improved digestive health and enhancing immune system modulation. As a result, a number of successful products have been launched on the Latin American market using Danisco probiotics.”
Functional yogurt In Brazil, Batavo was the first company to ride the functional yogurt wave. Bio Fibras, their probiotic skimmed yogurt, is enriched with Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis cultures from Danisco. Today, the product represents 14% of Batavo’s income from its yogurt business.
The Brazilian dairy cooperative, Frimesa, also recently launched a probiotic skimmed cultured milk under the healthy kids’ brand Friminho. Television commercials and in-store promotions are raising consumer awareness of the new product.
Fresh cheese The first probiotic cheese on the Brazilian market – SanBIOS - comes from Santa Clara. Containing Danisco’s probiotic cultures with Bifidibacterium Lactis BI-07, the fresh cheese targets consumers in southern Brazil. Santa Clara expects the product to account for 50% of its fresh cheese sales.
Silas Ricardo de Lima, product development and quality supervisor at Santa Clara comments: “Today, Santa Clara has a solid image among consumers due to its 96-year tradition for high quality products. The idea for this launch follows the global market trend for promoting health products.”
As part of its marketing campaign for SanBIOS, the company has produced a television commercial and created a website - www.coopsantaclara.com.br/sanbios - including recipes and tips for a healthy lifestyle.
Probiotic drink The second largest dairy company in Chile, Colun has responded to the probiotic trend by developing Vilib, a probiotic lactic drink containing Danisco’s Lactobacillus acidophilus. Ermeso Ureta, marketing manager at Colun, describes Vilib as a product for the whole family.
“Vilib is our functional products brand, developed to provide consumer health benefits. The first product in the range is Vilib Seguridad, which claims to strengthen immune defences.”
Infant nutrition
In Columbia, the growing infant nutrition market has inspired Alpina to add a specially formulated probiotic yogurt to their line of baby food products. The Danisco probiotics in the formulation benefit young digestive systems.
As Alpina’s spokesperson explains: “This unique yogurt is easy to digest, does not contain fruit pieces and has probiotic cultures. That gives it the smooth texture and flavour suitable for babies.”
